Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry Laboratory

Soil and water are fundamental resources for agriculture, playing a crucial role in crop growth, nutrient availability, and overall ecosystem health.

The Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry (SS & AC) laboratory, a state-of-the-art laboratory facility at College of Horticulture and Forestry, Pasighat, is dedicated to provide a comprehensive and accurate soil, water and plant analysis solutions and through which enabling the students, researchers, and farmers and other stakeholders related to agricultural sciences, to make informed decisions and implement the targeted management strategies, for achieving the enhanced crop productivity and sustained soil fertility.

The laboratory of SS & AC, utilizing the state-of-the-art technologies, advanced laboratory facilities, and a team of expert scientists to deliver reliable and insightful assessments of soil and water quality, not only enriches the students' academic hands-on experience cum practical skills that complement the classroom learning, but also helps to prepare them for impactful careers, in addressing the global agricultural challenges through scientific inquiry and practical application.

The Laboratory features the advanced instruments including Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, Flame Photometer, Nitrogen Analyzer, etc, for the precise soil, water, plant analysis, and fertility assessment, essentially required for understanding the soil properties and thereby optimizing the crop production. A rapid soil and water testing kit is also housed at this laboratory for producing quick qualitative results.

Soil test based crop production is the new strategy adopted by most of the farmers. In order to promote the soil testing and carry out the scientific crop production based on soil testing, this laboratory is rendering the soil testing service, on nominal charge-basis, round the year. This comprehensive suite of services with prescription and expert guidance, encompasses a wide range of analyses including soil fertility assessment, nutrient profiling, and water quality analysis, support the farmers and other stakeholders in terms of decision-making related to soil and water management practices. To create the awareness on soil testing and the need for Soil test based fertilizer recommendation in agriculture / horticulture, regular hands on trainings / demonstration programmes are being conducted, in this laboratory, to the farmers, line department officers of state government, besides the service to the farming community through various programmes /modules under Rural Work Experience and Skill Enhancement courses of B.Sc. students.
